Jaw surgery is a procedure used to treat jaws that are abnormally shaped. It is used to improve the appearance of the chin as well as the overall proportions of the face. Facial features play a significant role in how attractive a person appears. As a result, it is preferable if all structures on the face are balanced and harmonious within themselves.

The ideal chin position is expected to be 2-3 mm behind a perpendicular line drawn from the base of the nose. It is aesthetically pleasing for women to have their chin slightly behind their ears.

What is Maxillofacial Aesthetics Surgery ?

Mentoplasty, or maxillofacial aesthetic surgery, is a surgical procedure used to change the appearance of the chin and make it more compatible with the rest of the face. Maxillofacial surgery aesthetics, which are used to change the shape of the jaw, can be used in patients with small jaws using techniques such as tissue addition or implants. In the case of a jaw deformity, a portion of the jaw can be moved, relocated, or shortened. In patients with small jaws, tissues such as fat or bone taken from a suitable part of the body may be preferable. Shape correction is accomplished by moving forward in backward-pulled jaws and filing in very long jaws.

What is the purpose of  The Jaw Aesthetics Surgery?

Jaw surgery aesthetics is used to achieve a younger, more proportional appearance on the face as well as to correct congenital defects in the jaw structure. Because it is located beneath the mouth, which is one of the most important organs of the face, the chin is a prominent feature. The appearance of the chin draws attention to the harmony and symmetry of the face. Because it is in the midline, it is very effective at harmonizing the other elements of the face.

It can be used when the gums or upper teeth are visible when a person smiles, the upper jaw is longer, and the lower and upper teeth do not overlap when the mouth is closed. Similarly, when the most extreme point of the lower jaw is viewed from the side profile, jaw surgery can be performed if it is ahead or behind the lips.

The elimination of these problems is very beneficial because it eliminates anatomical problems in digestion as well as aesthetic appearance.

Who can benefit from Maxillofacial Surgery?

Jaw surgery aesthetics;

  • Having chewing, biting and digestive problems due to obvious problems in the upper or lower jaw,
  • It can be applied to people who want all parts of their face to be in harmony.

What are the different kinds of Maxillofacial Aesthetics?

Jaw surgery aesthetics; it is used if the patient has any biting or chewing problems, and two different methods are generally used. Orthognathic surgery, which involves shifting the jaw bones back and forth, is one of these. The other is orthodontic dental treatment, also known as wire therapy.

Orthodontic dental treatment is ineffective for patients who have severe biting and chewing problems. These patients will also require orthognathic surgery, which will allow the jaw bones to be moved forward or backward. These treatments, which are much more comprehensive and have a longer recovery period than chin aesthetic surgeries used for aesthetic concerns, can produce very successful results.

Chin aesthetics is usually performed with aesthetic concerns in patients who do not have any problems with biting or chewing because the chin does not complete the facial harmony and negatively affects it. This less invasive chin surgery is also advantageous for patients due to shorter recovery times.

In addition to such procedures, the chin rasp technique can be used depending on the patient’s needs. This procedure is used to correct deformities in either the lower or upper jaw bones. The deformities that cause the patients’ facial harmony can be eliminated using this technique, which is commonly used in chin aesthetic surgeries. Which technique will be used in patients with jaw problems is determined by the doctor after the evaluations made specifically for the patient.

Operation Process

Jaw aesthetic surgeries are planned together with a plastic surgery specialist, a dentist specialized in the field, and an orthodontist. The surgery must be performed by a plastic surgeon who has sufficient experience and training in this field. The patient may need to continue treatment with braces before and after the surgery.

Techniques to be used during jaw surgery, points such as how much the bones will be moved are determined depending on the measurements made. The operation, which is performed under general anesthesia, is completed in 2-3 hours on average. After the operation, both jaws are closed for an average of 6 to 8 weeks by means of special wires and special elastics attached to the patient’s teeth. During this period, the patient’s nutrition is provided with liquid foods in a special way.

Healing Process

It is normal to experience swelling, pain, and slight tension around the chin in the first week following chin surgery. The patient’s lower lips may become numb for a short period of time. In the first week and after the surgery, there are no problems with eating or biting. However, after eating, the patient should practice good oral hygiene. The incision sites in the mouth begin to heal at the end of the first week following the operation, and the swelling around the chin begins to fade within the first week as well.

What are the risks?

As with all aesthetic surgery procedures, it is possible to reduce potential risks if maxillofacial surgery procedures are performed in collaboration with an experienced surgeon and a team. Blood loss, nerve damage, infection, pain, and jaw fracture are all possible risks in maxillofacial surgery procedures, though they are uncommon.
