Liposuction is a regional slimming and body shaping procedure that has been frequently applied recently. The process of absorbing and removing the adipose tissue with the help of an aspirator device and cannulas is called liposuction. The liposuction procedure is not intended for weight loss or direct weight loss. As a result of the liposuction procedure, how many sizes of thinning will be achieved in the patient varies by the patient, but one to five sizes of thinning can be achieved. It is possible to remove 3 to 4 kilos of fat from the person during the operation. The fat taken is pure fat and it is known that it contributes to 5-6 kilos on average in the person’s body.
Liposuction is applied to remove resistant fat that does not respond to regular diet and exercise. Before the procedure, the preferred patient has ideal or close to the ideal weight. It is possible to remove up to 5 liters of fat from the patient with surgery. However, due to the edema that occurs in the patient’s body immediately after the procedure, weight loss cannot be noticed immediately. Net results can be seen in about 2-3 months, when the edema disappears and the body adapts to its new state. The patient seems to have lost more weight since fat is removed from unwanted areas where there are resistant fat accumulations.
Where is Liposuction Applied?
Liposuction can be applied to many different parts of the body such as under the chin, neck, breasts, abdomen, hips, inner side of the knee, cheeks, upper inner side of the arm, waist, thigh, and back of the leg. Liposuction can also be applied as a complementary procedure in other body contour correction surgeries.
Based on the assistive devices used during the liposuction procedure, liposuction can be classified as LAL-laser assisted liposuction, VAL-vaser assisted liposuction, PAL-power device assisted liposuction, and classical liposuction without device assistance.
Liposuction can be applied to anyone who has excess regional fat resistant to regular sports and diet, is suitable for the procedure, has ideal or close to their ideal weight.
How to Perform Liposuction?
Liposuction is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the scope of the procedure to be applied, that is, the width of the application area and how many areas will be applied. As part of the procedure, stubborn fat in the application area is inflated by injecting a special liquid. A few mm-long incisions are made on or near this area, and metal pipes called cannulas with a diameter of 2-4 mm are inserted under the skin through these incisions. The cannulas are connected to the vacuum device by means of transparent hoses. By operating the vacuum device, the cannulas are moved at the appropriate depth in the fat accumulation areas. Thus, excess fat is removed from the area. The process of absorbing fat by means of vacuum continues until the desired body lines and a smooth skin surface are reached.
How Long Does Liposuction Surgery Take?
The duration of the liposuction surgery may vary depending on the size and characteristics of the area to be applied for the patient. The fat to be removed by liposuction surgery should not exceed 5% of the patient’s weight in kilograms.
Pay Attention to These Points After Liposuction
It is normal to experience some pain, soreness or burning after liposuction, depending on the application area. These are minimal and can be easily relieved by taking simple painkillers and resting. If the surgery was performed under general anesthesia, it may be preferable to keep the patient under observation at the hospital for 1 or 2 nights. After the operation, special corsets worn by the patient should be used for 6 weeks.
Since the fat cells in the area where liposuction is applied are removed, the number of fat cells in the area is reduced. These cells do not increase in number again in the following period. Therefore, as long as the patient maintains their weight, the results obtained from the liposuction procedure remain permanent. However, if there are serious changes in the patient’s weight, the fat cells in the area continue to store fat and their volume increases even if their number remains the same. In this case, they can fill the place of the reduced fat cells in volume.
Liposuction is a harmless procedure when applied to the appropriate person with appropriate methods. However, the application must be carried out by experts in the field. It is beneficial for health as it helps to get rid of the unnecessary fat load in the body. It is also an effective method for the person to have a more aesthetic appearance visually.
Liposuction, especially applied to large areas, is a very serious procedure. Depending on the amount of adipose tissue removed from the body, the body metabolism has a completely new balance. This process may cause the patient to become prone to various complications. The wider the scope of the transaction, the greater the risk. For this reason, major surgeries combined with liposuction should be treated meticulously. The expertise of the doctor and the fact that he/she performs an operation in accordance with certain principles reduces the risk of complications.
If there is laxity in the skin of the area where liposuction will be performed, it is highly likely that sagging will occur after liposuction. For this reason, it should be preferred to apply stretching process together with liposuction. Recovery time after liposuction surgery may vary depending on factors such as the number of areas treated, the size of the areas, the patient’s blood values, the amount of fat taken and the general structure of the patient. If liposuction is performed on small areas with local anesthesia, the healing process is faster.
Patients undergoing liposuction should pay close attention to their diet in the post-operative period. They should not take excessive calories and should take care to exercise regularly.
