PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma, refers to the application of platelet-enriched plasma. The procedure follows these steps: a small amount of blood is taken from the patient, this blood is inserted in a special tube which will be subjected to centrifugation, blood is separated into its components and the PRP is injected back to the patient.
Platelets, in other words thrombocytes, can be defined as blood components containing the growth factors needed for the repair of damaged tissues in the human body and their return to their natural state. In case of any damage to the tissues in the human body, the blood collects the platelets to the said tissue and allows the repair process to begin. PRP aims to give the target tissue a much higher number of platelets than can be transported through the blood circulation. This would start the repair of the damaged tissue extremely quickly and strongly and results in a quicker outcome. This is because the density of platelets obtained by the PRP is 2 to 4 times higher than that found in the blood.
Aging of the skin happens due to the loss of some physical properties, just as in injuries. Therefore, applications for skin rejuvenation imitate the body while it heals wounds. In methods such as laser and peeling, the skin is damaged to a certain extent and this damage is used as a trigger for rapid healing of the skin. This is followed by the release of the growth factor, starting the healing process of the skin. Likewise, dermocosmetic products similarly enable substances to restructure the skin or synthetically obtained growth factors to initiate the healing process. We should always remember that the structure that will provide the most effective, natural and rapid repair of the damage to the skin is also a part of the skin. Therefore, plasma application should be accepted as a method that will activate this power circulating in the vessels.
PRP Is An Effective Medical Aesthetic Procedure
In PRP, which is one of the medical aesthetic procedures, a small amount of blood is taken from the patient and centrifugation is applied. The blood is separated into its components. Thus, the part of the blood consisting of red cells, which has an average of 200,000 platelets in each milliliter, is separated and the gel called PRP, which has a platelet density of up to 1.5 million per milliliter, is obtained. In addition to having functions related to blood coagulation, platelets also have the ability to secrete growth factors that heal tissue damage. The platelet-rich portion obtained as a result of the centrifugation process is injected where needed. Natural growth factors, which will reverse the effects of tissue damage or aging, are injected to the application area. These growth factors injected to the damaged parts of the body promote the body’s self-healing process.
PRP is a medical aesthetic procedure that should be performed in the examination room. A small number of blood is taken from the patient and centrifuge is applied. The blood is then separated into three sections. The PRP, which will be injected to the treatment area, is generally 1 to 3 ml. Following injection, healing usually starts in couple of weeks and lasts about 3 to 12 months.
Since the PRP is obtained from the patient’s own blood, it does not have any adverse effects. A temporary swelling in the injection area is considered as normal. This improves in 1-2 days, however ice compression and simple pain killers may be used. As the PRP is only injected to the patient from whom the blood is taken, the risk of contamination of blood-borne diseases is eliminated. PRP should be injected immediately after it is obtained. Otherwise, it may become less effective over time.
PRP can be used to prevent hair loss, correct fine wrinkles on the skin, accelerate wound healing, as well as when treating scars, acne scars and performing facial rejuvenation. PRP is an effective and reliable method that can be used on all skin types and colors. Since it is obtained from the patient’s own blood, the risk of allergic reaction is negligible. It can be used successfully in sensitive areas around the mouth and eyes where fillers, lasers and neurotoxins cannot offer the desired effect. Thanks to the effect provided by the PRP procedure, treatments such as face lift may no longer be necessary. PRP, which can be used to reduce the prominence of acne scars, can be applied in combination with other surgical and non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures. It is an ideal option over more invasive procedures as it causes minimal discomfort and leaves no scars. In addition, it can be easily applied to elderly patients who may have difficulty in recovery. After the injection, it does not cause any side effects other than swelling, redness and bruising in the application area, which decrease gradually within 12-24 hours. Patients begin to notice a significant improvement in their skin texture and tone within about 8 weeks. This lasts until the collagen regeneration process is completed. The effects of the PRP procedure, which provides long-term results, may last from 9 months to as long as 2 years.
