Breast augmentation surgery is a surgical operation often preferred by women whose breasts are smaller than the desired size. Breast augmentation surgery, which is very frequently applied today, is performed very easily and has a comfortable recovery process if the doctor’s recommendations are followed.
Breast implants filled with silicone gel are used in breast augmentation surgeries. Although the breast augmentation procedure with fat injection is an alternative method of breast augmentation, breast augmentation surgeries provide more permanent results.
How is Breast Augmentation Surgery Performed?
Breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Silicone prostheses are placed with incisions made from the areas determined depending on the technique used. The silicone prosthesis can be placed under the breast tissue or under the muscle in front of the rib cage, depending on the surgeon’s decision for the patient. After the examination, the silicone prosthesis to be used is determined depending on the patient’s expectations, body structure, and the desired result. Likewise, factors such as the anatomical structure of the person and the elasticity of the skin play a role in determining both the surgical technique and the prosthesis to be used. For this reason, it should be considered that it is not possible to apply a single type of prosthesis to every patient.
One of the most curious questions of women who want to have breast augmentation surgery is “Do silicone prostheses cause cancer?”. As a result of research, there is no evidence that silicone prostheses cause cancer.
Who is Breast Augmentation Surgery Applied to?
The breasts of people who will undergo breast augmentation surgery are smaller than the rest of the body. Breasts may be small congenitally or may become smaller due to volume loss after pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight loss. In addition, in cases where there is an asymmetry between the two breasts, breast augmentation surgery may be preferred. In such cases, it is possible to make two breast tissues similar to each other with breast augmentation surgery.
Breast augmentation surgery is applied to those over the age of 18 unless there is a medical necessity. At the same time, care is taken to ensure that the patient’s developmental age and breast development are completed.
Breast augmentation is not suitable for women who plan to become mothers in the near future after surgery. In such cases, it is much more correct to postpone breast augmentation aesthetics until after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
What Are the Types of Breast Prosthesis?
Breast prostheses are divided into two, namely drop and round prosthesis depending on their shapes. A more natural breast-shaped appearance is obtained with drop prostheses. Breast prostheses are classified as containing silicone and physiological saline solution in terms of content. In terms of surface structure, silicone prostheses are divided into rough and smooth. Prostheses with a rough surface cause less capsule formation than smooth-surface prostheses.
What Should Be Considered Before Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Before breast augmentation surgery, the patient should inform her doctor about any health problems or regular medications. Taking of aspirin and derivatives should be discontinued at least one week before the operation. Smoking should be discontinued approximately 2 weeks before the operation, as it may adversely affect the quality of wound healing.
What Should Be Considered After Breast Augmentation Surgery?
It is not a very painful process after breast augmentation surgery. Augmentation in the breasts can be observed and felt immediately, and it is considered normal to feel some tightness after the operation. A special dressing is made to create the necessary pressure on the breasts. If a drain is placed to drain the leaks that may occur in the places where the prosthesis is placed during the surgery, it is removed after a few days. It is possible to experience extreme sensitivity or numbness in the early post-operative period.
Patients can usually start to drink fluids 6 hours after surgery. Under normal circumstances, the patient is discharged the day after the operation. During the first week, care should be taken to lie on the back and turning sideways should be limited.
Usually, the patient can take a shower 2 days after the surgery. On the 2nd day after the surgery, the bandage is opened, the dressing is done, and the patient is put on a sports bra. The sports bra should be used continuously for at least 3 weeks after the surgery.
Although complications are intense in the first 4 days after the operation, edema, tension and possible color changes may occur. During this period, the patient is recommended to rest. Usually, after a week, the complications ease and go away. Under normal conditions, the patient can start driving a few days after the operation and can return to work and social life. It is necessary to wait 8 weeks after the operation to start sports such as tennis, swimming and fitness.
With the disappearance of edema over time, the breast begins to take its final shape and gain a natural appearance. Although the breast usually takes its full form between 4 and 6 months, in some cases this period may take up to 12 months.
Lactiferous ducts are not damaged because the breast tissue is not removed during breast augmentation surgery. Accordingly, there is no problem with breastfeeding after breast augmentation surgery.
